There are many coaching definitions. The International Coaching Federation defines it as the following:
"Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal & professional potential"
Put simply, coaching is a conversation with purpose that explores your desire to bring about change in your life, in a safe & trusted space. By listening, asking open questions and providing you space to think, your coach will support you to examine your current situation, behaviour & thought patterns and look at potential steps to make a change. Coaching is about looking forward, not back.
No. Whilst both are aimed at helping you move forward, mentoring is more of a teacher / student relationship and is great for answering specific questions in the mentors area of expertise. For example "How do I write a strategy paper?". A mentor will be able to provide direct advice or next steps.
Coaching is more of a facilitated conversation, where you are the expert in you, and your coach is the expert in the coaching process. Together you move forward towards your goal, which may be something like "I want to understand why I struggle to keep my boundaries in place?" or " I am considering a career change and want to explore my options". Coaching is about strengthening your own self awareness & learning.
It depends! Typically, coaching is not an ongoing relationship. Coaches and coachees come together to work on a specific area of interest & go their separate ways until the next time. Booking in 4 - 6 sessions, spread over a couple of months works well. It gives you the longevity to think, learn, reflect and even implement some of your changes. If you need a more intensive focus, the sessions can be scheduled closer together.
A Halcyon Bird, often identified as a Kingfisher, is from Greek mythology. It was thought that the bird brought a calming and peaceful presence to the rough seas of the winter solstice, by nesting directly on the waves.
Therefore, a Halcyon Bird brings peace and tranquillity for those experiencing stormy seas.
